The IKM Vines project has been exploring the use of semantic web services to automatically tag and categorise information from a range of sources, making use of linkable open data to enrich plain text documents and make them easier to discover: surfacing knowledge that is not prioritised by conventional search engines.

Current versions of IKM Vines rely upon the Open Calais service to provide tags to enrich documents, which uses a knowledge base developed by business publisher Thomson Routers. The UK Government recently released a similar data enrichment service based on their open data. Each service can only provide tagging and enrichment on the basis of the data (and open data) it contains.
